A good AFT score should give you room above your required passing total and keep every event clear of its minimum. The Army's five-event test is scored out of 500, so you can compare your event breakdown with our AFT score calculator before choosing a goal.

What Is a Good AFT Score to Aim For?

A 400 is a useful training target beyond the passing totals, while 450 gives you a higher goal averaging 90 points per event. However, they're suggested targets for your training, rather than official Army ratings such as "good" or "excellent."

For an ordinary five-event test, the Army's AFT guidance requires at least 60 points in every event, plus 300 overall under General scoring or 350 under Combat scoring. Here's how common totals compare:

Total out of 500 Average per event What it tells you
300 60 General minimum, if every event reaches 60
350 70 Combat minimum, if every event reaches 60
400 80 A practical target above both passing totals
450 90 A higher target with more room above the total minimums
500 100 Maximum score, requiring 100 in all five events

The averages help you plan, but a 350 total can come from different combinations of event scores, provided every event meets its minimum.

Why Does Your Lowest Event Matter?

Your lowest event shows how much room there is before missing an individual passing requirement, especially if most of the total comes from stronger events.

For instance, event scores of 99, 99, 76, 76 and 60 add up to 410 overall. Both total requirements are met, but the event at 60 has no spare points. If that result falls to 59 on the next test and everything else stays the same, the total becomes 409 and you fail the event minimum.

Does a Good AFT Score Change With Age or Standard?

Raw-performance targets change depending on your test-day age group and applicable scoring standard. General scoring uses age and sex, while Combat scoring uses the age-specific M/C column for everyone. The official AFT scoring scales show the weights, repetitions and times behind each point value, so an 80-point result can require different raw performances in different columns.

So if you're comparing results with someone in another age group, the points show how each performance scores against its applicable table. And the raw results show what you actually lifted, how many repetitions you completed or how long an event took.

How Do You Choose Your Next Score Target?

Your next target depends on the event scores and what you need from the test. If one event is near 60, building some room above it is a useful first goal. Once every event is comfortably passing, a higher total gives you another target to work toward.

For a specific target, our AFT score chart shows the next raw-performance thresholds in your column, which you can compare with current results. The lowest-scoring event deserves attention, but how easily it improves depends on the performance required and your training.

Also, if promotion value is the priority, the AFT promotion points calculator can check the conversion for a qualifying recorded score. It covers the fitness contribution. Your complete promotion total and eligibility need to be considered separately.

Check Your Own Event Breakdown

You'll have a clearer goal with the actual event scores in front of you. Enter the age group, standard and five performances into the calculator linked above, then keep the lowest event alongside the total. Compare both on the next attempt. More room in the weakest event helps show progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 350 a Good AFT Score?

A 350 meets the Combat total minimum and exceeds the General minimum, provided every event earns at least 60. Our 350 AFT score guide explains its event combinations, passing margins and promotion value.

Is 400 a Good AFT Score?

A 400 is a useful training target averaging 80 points per event, although the individual results still need checking. Our 400 AFT score guide explains its passing margins and promotion value.

Is 450 a Good AFT Score?

A 450 is a higher training target averaging 90 points per event. It's 90% of the maximum, although that percentage doesn't establish a population ranking or guarantee every event passed.

Is 460 a Good AFT Score?

A 460 leaves just 40 points below the maximum. With no event worth more than 100, that total means every event earned at least 60 on an ordinary five-event test.

Is 465 a Good AFT Score?

A 465 reaches 93% of the maximum and puts every event at 65 or above. You have more room above each event minimum than the total alone might suggest.

Is 475 a Good AFT Score?

A 475 is 95% of the maximum. Even if four events earn 100, the fifth must earn 75, giving every event room above its passing minimum.

Is 480 a Good AFT Score?

A 480 leaves only 20 points available to gain, and every event must already be at 80 or above. Your next target depends on where those remaining points are.
