Is 450 a Good AFT Score in 2026?
Information checked October 7, 2026.

If you're asking, “Is 450 a good AFT score?”, it's a strong training result when all five events pass. You've earned 90% of the 500-point maximum, with room above both passing totals. But your event breakdown and promotion goal still matter. You can check the five scores with our AFT score calculator before choosing your next target.
Is 450 a Good AFT Score in 2026?
Yes, 450 is a useful higher training target, provided every required event meets its minimum.
Calling it strong is an interpretation of your score, rather than an official Army rating or evidence that you rank above most Soldiers.
For an ordinary five-event test, the Army's AFT guidance requires at least 60 points in every event. The overall minimum is 300 under General scoring and 350 under Combat scoring.
Your 450 therefore sits 150 points above the General total minimum or 100 above the Combat minimum.

That gives you room above the overall requirement. And if your previous result was 420, reaching 450 adds 30 points. Whether it meets your personal goal depends on where those gains came from and what you want your next test to achieve.
Profile-specific tests need their own requirement checks.
Can You Fail the AFT With a 450 Total?
Yes. Four 100-point events and one 50-point event add up to 450, but the 50 fails the individual-event requirement.
A high total doesn't cancel that failed event.
These point combinations are available in the age 22–26 M/C column of the official AFT scoring scales:
| Event | Fairly even result | Failed run |
|---|---|---|
| Three-repetition deadlift | 91 | 100 |
| Hand-release push-ups | 89 | 100 |
| Sprint-drag-carry | 90 | 100 |
| Plank | 90 | 100 |
| Two-mile run | 90 | 50 |
| Total | 450 | 450 |
The first scorecard passes both total standards and keeps every event well above 60. The second needs attention to the run before its total can represent a passing test.
Dividing 450 by five gives a 90-point average. You don't need exactly 90 in each event, though. For instance, the deadlift in the first example earns 91, while the push-ups earn 89, and the total still reaches 450.
How Many Promotion Points Does a 450 AFT Score Earn?
A qualifying record AFT score of 450 earns 90 fitness promotion points for SGT or SSG under the Regular Army and U.S. Army Reserve semi-centralized system.
AR 600-8-19, paragraph 3-15c and Table 3-4 requires a passing score in every required event taken and uses the latest record test.
The conversion works in bands, so a small score increase won't always add promotion points:
| Qualifying record AFT total | Fitness promotion points |
|---|---|
| 450–454 | 90 |
| 455–459 | 93 |
| 465–469 | 99 |
| 500 | 120 |
For example, improving from 450 to 454 leaves you at 90 promotion points. Reaching 455 adds three.
Our AFT promotion points calculator lets you compare another qualifying total with these bands.
Those 90 points are the fitness contribution, rather than your complete promotion total.
Eligibility, other point categories and the applicable cutoff still affect whether you get promoted.
What Should You Aim For After 450?
For promotion value, 455 is the next nearby total that changes the conversion.
For training, the useful target depends on your individual performances and the scoring column that applies to you.
In the age 22–26 M/C column, a sprint-drag-carry time of 1:43 earns 90 points, while 1:37 earns 95. If you make that six-second improvement and your other four scores stay unchanged, your 450 becomes 455 and its qualifying promotion value rises from 90 to 93 points.

For example, that six-second change applies to the stated column; the same times can earn different points in another age group.
That example shows the score change, not how quickly you can achieve it. Your current training and event results will determine which improvement is realistic. If an event sits close to 60, building room above that minimum may matter more to your next passing result than chasing points in an event you already perform well.
Choose a Target That Fits Your Event Scores
Your five event scores tell you whether the next goal should strengthen a weak event or move you into another promotion band.
If you're comparing longer-term targets, our guide to what counts as a good AFT score puts 450 alongside other useful totals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 450 Put You in the 90th Percentile?
No. It means you've earned 90% of the available points. A percentile compares your result with a defined group, so you'd need that group's score distribution to establish your position.
Does a Diagnostic 450 Earn Promotion Points?
The regulation bases fitness promotion points on a qualifying record test. A diagnostic 450 can help you assess your progress, but it doesn't itself supply the record score used for that conversion.
Does 450 Exempt You From Body Composition Screening?
No. The Army's current body composition policy summary says an AFT score does not exempt you from the waist-to-height ratio standard under Army Directive 2026-13. Don't use an older high-score exemption rule to assess your current requirement.
