How to Use Pace Training for the AFT 2-Mile Run
The 2-Mile Run follows the other four scored AFT events. A target-time plan gives the runner objective checkpoints instead of requiring pace to be estimated by feel. Enter the finish time associated with your desired score, then use the calculated mile and track splits during practice.
Two miles are 3,218.688 meters, not exactly 3,200. This calculator therefore lists eight full 400-meter laps plus a final 18.688-meter segment. On test day, always follow the course markings and grader instructions.
400-Meter Lap Pacing & Split Countdown
Even splits provide a simple planning baseline. Compare each checkpoint with the elapsed target, then adjust conservatively for the course, weather, and your conditioning.
Example 2-Mile Run Pace Chart
These examples use four current ages 17–21 scoring targets from the Army’s official AFT scoring scales. They are examples, not universal score thresholds.
| Performance Level | Target 2MR Time | Mile Pace (min/mi) | 400m Lap Split | Target Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men 17–21: 100 points | 13:22 | 6:41 / mi | 1:39.7 / 400m | 8.98 mph |
| Women 17–21: 100 points | 16:00 | 8:00 / mi | 1:59.3 / 400m | 7.50 mph |
| Men 17–21: 60 points | 19:57 | 9:58.5 / mi | 2:28.7 / 400m | 6.02 mph |
| Women 17–21: 60 points | 22:55 | 11:27.5 / mi | 2:50.9 / 400m | 5.24 mph |
Turning the Pace Result into a Training Plan
The calculator supplies arithmetic, not an individualized training prescription. A coach or unit program can use the target pace to structure workouts such as:
- Repetitions: Practice selected 400- or 800-meter splits with recovery appropriate to the athlete’s program.
- Continuous running: Build sustainable aerobic volume at an easier effort than the target 2-mile pace.
- Specific rehearsals: Periodically test pacing after earlier AFT events while managing total workload and recovery.
