Five-event AFT guide

How to Improve Your Sprint-Drag-Carry Time

Treat the SDC as five linked 50-meter shuttles: sprint, sled drag, lateral, kettlebell carry, and sprint. Improve the slowest transition and movement before simply adding more all-out repetitions.

Start With the Correct Score Target

The same SDC time can earn different points under the General scale because age and sex matter. Combat scoring is sex-neutral but still age-normed. Look up the target in the exact AFT score chart or use the SDC Calculator; do not assume one universal “70-point time.”

Audit the Five Shuttles Separately

Film or time each segment during practice. Record sprint out-and-back, sled drag, lateral movement, kettlebell carry, final sprint, and the four equipment or direction transitions. A total time alone tells you whether performance changed; split times show where it changed.

1. Opening sprint

Accelerate under control and approach the turn ready to lower the center of mass. An opening sprint that is too aggressive can save little time while making the sled and carry deteriorate.

2. Sled drag

Keep steady backward steps and continuous tension on the straps. Practice the first pull from a dead stop, because poor setup and slack often cost more than small differences in top dragging speed.

3. Lateral shuttle

Stay square to the side required by the event and rehearse the change of direction. Avoid crossing the feet if it reduces balance. Use the same repeatable steps into the line each time.

4. Kettlebell carry

Pick up both implements with a braced trunk, settle the load quickly, and maintain short efficient strides. Grip endurance matters, but excessive shoulder tension can waste energy.

5. Final sprint

The goal is to preserve enough speed to accelerate after returning the kettlebells. Practice the set-down and turn as one transition rather than pausing before the last shuttle.

A Simple Two-Day Weekly Practice Structure

Technique day: use submaximal efforts, full recovery, and repeated work on the slowest shuttle or transition. Specific-conditioning day: perform short SDC combinations or full repetitions with enough rest to keep movement quality consistent. Increase volume gradually; do not turn every session into a record attempt.

Supporting work can include short accelerations, backward drags, loaded carries, lower-body strength, and aerobic conditioning. Choose loads and volume appropriate to training history. Stop for sharp pain, dizziness, or loss of safe movement, and follow medical-profile restrictions.

Measure Progress Without Guessing

Use the same surface, equipment, setup, footwear, and timing method when comparing practice results. Log total time and segment splits. A one-second improvement only matters if the setup and timing are comparable. Recheck the exact point value after each meaningful time change rather than estimating from a linear formula.
